Contract for Hartha TPP (Iraq)signed 07/21/2011
VO Technopromexport JSC and Zarubezhenergoproekt JSC signed the Contract for carrying-out of design work for rehabilitation of Units 2 & 3 of Hartha Thermal Power Plant in Iraq on 21/07/2011.
The Al-Hartha thermal power plant is situated on the bank of the Shatt Al-Arab river at a distance of approx 33 km to the north from the city of Basrah and 25 km to the Iranian border. The TPP consists of 4 x 200 MW units. The units are natural gas, heavy fuel oil or crude oil fired units. The power plant was designed, fabricated and installed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Japan) and put into operation in 1979.
In the course of the Gulf War of 1991 all four units were damaged. After rehabilitation Unit 1 resumed operation in 1996 and Unit 4 in 1993.
For rehabilitation of Unit 2 & 3 the Ministry of Energy of Iraq placed orders in 1999 and 2000 for supply of the equipment to replace missing and damaged equipment. The rehabilitation work started but was interrupted by the warfare.
In 2005 the Ministry of Energy of Iraq made decision on resuming the rehabilitation project of Units 2 & 3 with financing by the International Bank. This project is aimed at restoring Units 2 & 3 up to initial capacity of 200 MW each and ensuring additional service life of 20 years. Moreover, Units 2 & 3 shall be equipped with new distributed control systems and a new control system (DCS) for all four units.
